Introducing the Enabler concept
Written by Louise Ellekilde Fogstrup
I have always struggled with the fact that working hours must be set to a fixed time or that our work is limited to a specific location. Why do things have to be set up this way? I clearly get it for some jobs like nursing, which is the career of one of my closest friends. I don’t, however, understand why this happens in my field.
Having worked in the Change Management industry myself for many years and loving it, the one thing I was missing above all was the flexibility to create the life I wish to live. For me personally, this cannot be defined as “work”, “family”, or “free time”. Instead, it’s a mixture of all these elements combined with the freedom to work from where I want to work.
Founding Enabling Change in 2016
It’s not about having a long 6-week holiday or being done by 2 pm every day. It’s about working within the field I love and engaging with interesting people who challenge my thinking. It‘s about pushing my limits, growing and delivering better results every time, and supporting my clients in leading sustainable change. For me, it is very much about flourishing and leading in an industry where I feel I can make an impact and add value.
I believe I should be able to do all that and be present for my family and loved ones when needed. In my opinion, I should be able to go for a walk in the sun when it has been raining non-stop all week and do the work I have committed to.
This was my personal motivation for founding Enabling Change in 2016.
It’s also my motivation in our enabling concept, where my goal is to contribute to motivating others to build the life they want to live with a career they love.
Enablers are accountable people with a strong purpose and passion
The key to this is to work with accountable people with a strong purpose and passion. If you do that, there’s no reason to tie people down with standard working hours, one location, pre-defined vacation times, or limits.
Once these people have said they will deliver, they will not go back on their word.
They will deliver, not because they are working in a specified location, nor because they work at a particular time, but because of the people they are. They are enablers.
These are also people who, more often than others, have other passions. They are only fulfilled when they can be challenged at work and have the time and flexibility to pursue other passions. Their passions could be sports, nature, arts, spending time with their children after school or caring for their ageing parents. What they want to do in their personal life is not important. The fact that they can commit and work within a flexible framework that facilitates living an abundant life is.
